Fighting between Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region and breakaway Somaliland has killed dozens of soldiers, according to a witness and a military commander who spoke of a “hellish” outbreak of violence.
The clashes on Thursday morning appeared to be a resumption of more than 10 years of periodic conflict between Puntland and Somaliland over the disputed Sool region.

The armies of breakaway Somaliland and Puntland early Thursday engaged each other in heavy fighting, reports said.
Both sides reportedly employed light and heavy guns near Tukaraq District, about 1,100km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Forces loyal to Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar engaged in fierce clashes around Derna, as two soldiers were killed in a car bomb and another was abducted from a checkpoint.
The fighting south-west of Derna was the most intense since Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) stepped up its campaign to take control of Derna, said Milad al-Zwai, spokesman for the LNA’s Special Forces.

At least 16 people have been reported killed and more than 30 wounded in an explosion in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, as the Taliban pushed ahead with their annual spring offensive across the country.

Clashes between Ukrainian forces and separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine have escalated, the worst outbreak of fighting so far this year, officials said Monday.
The headquarters for the Ukrainian operations in the east said two soldiers were killed and another four were wounded in fighting near the village of Yuzhnoye early Monday.
