Rebels in northern Chad attacked government forces this week at the border with Libya, the fighters and two military sources said on Friday, although the government denied an attack had taken place.
A fledgling rebel movement, the Military Command Council for the Salvation of the Republic (CCMSR), says it seeks to overthrow President Idriss Deby, as Chad faces threats from militants and is trying to prevent the influx of extremists fleeing the Libyan conflict.

Five soldiers have been killed and seven wounded in eastern Ukraine during an assault by separatist forces, Ukraine’s defence ministry says.
Four died during a five-hour clash near Krymske, a village 50km (31 miles) north-west of Luhansk. Another was killed by artillery fire.

The first units of Armenian interior troops will be sent to Tavush province on August 23 to start protection of Armenian border with Azerbaijan.
Tavush has an extensive border with Azerbaijan, the chief of staff of the Police Force Armen Ghukasyan told reporters on August 21.

Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland says it will not negotiate with the self-declared republic of Somaliland over their disputed border.
Puntland’s defence committee at the weekend threatened war in order to liberate “Puntland territories occupied by Somaliland.”

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Tatmadaw (government military) have had 15 clashes since the completion of the third session of 21st Century Panglong Conference which was held in July this year.
TNLA said that they had clashes with Tatmadaw due to offensives in the area controlled by them. The TNLA issued a statement which said that they fought two times for five hours on August 19 between Nan Phate village and Lwe Pan Tan village in Mong Ngaw Township.
