A pre-dawn Taliban raid on a military base in northern Afghanistan has killed at least 40 security forces, the latest in a series of insurgent attacks across the country inflicting heavy casualties on government forces.
A security official in the province of Baghlan, where the attack occurred, told VOA on condition of anonymity that 31 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and nine policemen were among the dead.

There was a brief exchange of fire between the police and Maoists near Satkosia Tiger Reserve here in Odisha late last night. No causalities were reported.
The Maoists of SDS Division (Sambalpur, Deogarh and Sundergarh), according to sources, became more active in the Satkosia sanctuary after some of its key members were killed in police encounter.

The Syrian government sent more military reinforcements to the outskirts of rebel-held Idlib province Monday, ahead of an offensive expected in the next few days against militants there, activists said.
Further north in the province, the death toll from Sunday’s explosion in Sarmada rose to 67 people killed as rescue workers found more victims buried under the rubble.

More than 100 people were killed and 133 injured as hundreds of Taliban militants launched an attack in Afghanistan’s city of Ghazni since August 10. The clashes are still going on.
Of the deceased, at least 90 were either military or law enforcement personnel, while civilians accounted for 13 of the deaths, reported Sputnik.

Both Iranian forces and Kurdish rebels announced over ten dead on the opposite side on Saturday in sustained fighting in northeastern Iran the night before near the town of Oshnavieh (Shno), not far from the border of the Kurdistan Region.
“Heavy clashes erupted between Kurdistan’s #Peshmerga Forces and #Iran’s terrorist #IRGC at 01:00,” read an online statement released by the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), adding, “The clash lasted for 5 hours and according to initial reports 12 IRGC terrorist were killed.”
