After week-long peace talks at a castle in Sweden, the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels have agreed to a cease-fire in Hodeidah, a strategically significant port city held by the rebels.
The ability to import food, medicine and fuel through the port is essential for many Yemenis, and a Saudi blockade of Hodeidah helped drive widespread hunger in the country.

Turkey will start a military operation east of the Euphrates river in northern Syria in a “few days,” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said.
“It is time to realize our decision to wipe out terror groups east of the Euphrates,” Erdoğan said in a speech at the Turkish Defense Industry Summit held at the presidential complex in Ankara on Dec. 12.

Indonesia’s government on Tuesday rejected a demand by rebels in the country’s restive Papua province to hold negotiations on the territory’s self-determination, following a Dec. 2 attack on a construction site that left at least 17 dead.
An insurgency has simmered in Papua since the early 1960s, when Indonesia annexed the region that was a former Dutch colony. It was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 after a U.N.-sponsored ballot that was seen as a sham by many.

Four policemen were killed when rebels stormed a police post in the southern part of Indian-administered Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The state police chief Dilbagh Singh told Al Jazeera the police were attacked on Tuesday while they guarded four families of a minority Hindu community of Kashmiri Pandits.

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian armed forces have 27 times violated the ceasefire along the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Dec. 10.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
