Egyptian security forces say they’ve killed 14 militants and seized a ton of explosives in an operation in the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.
They said on Sunday that their offensive involved clashes with Islamic militants in desert areas outside the city of el-Arish, adding that the extremists had intended to plant roadside bombs in areas between there and the cities of Rafah and Sheikh Zuweyid.

Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists attacked a United Nations peacekeeping base in Aguelhoc in northern Mali’s Kidal region, killing at least eight peacekeepers, the UN mission in Mali said Sunday.
“The current toll is eight blue helmets killed and several injured. The peacekeepers managed to neutralize some attackers, and a prosecution was initiated against those who fled,”said Myriam Dessables, spokesperson for UN mission in Mali.

“A short while ago, a rocket was fired at the northern Golan Heights and was intercepted by the ‘Iron Dome’ aerial defence system,” an Israeli military statement said.
A military spokeswoman told AFP the rocket was fired from Syria. No further details were immediately provided.

Police in Northern Ireland said Sunday they suspected Irish Republican Army dissidents to be responsible for a “reckless” car bombing outside a courthouse in the city of Londonderry.
Two men in their 20s have been arrested over the explosion which happened shortly after 8.00 p.m. local time (3.00 p.m. ET) on Saturday as people were socializing in nearby venues.

Myanmar’s army has killed 13 rebel fighters in the western Rakhine State, a military spokesman said yesterday, as government troops battle to contain a new insurgency in the troubled region.
Fighting between security forces and the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group seeking greater autonomy for Rakhine, has forced some 5,000 civilians to flee their homes since early December, according to the United Nations.
