Somalia: Somali troops retake strategic town and frees 33 child soldiers from al-Shabaab

The Somali National Army [SNA] conducted yet another sophisticated operation on Friday, state-owned media reported, which targeted sections of Kuntuwarey town in the southern part of the country, leading to the liberation of the region, which has been one of the hideouts of al-Shabaab militants.

Kuntuwarey town is located on the road between Somali capital Mogadishu and the port town of Barawe, which is manned by troops from the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces [UPDF]. Friday’s operation was also aided by the Ugandan troops, who have been critical in pushing for law and order in Somalia.

India: Rebels kill 2 policemen in Kashmir the day before of India’s independence

Rebels attacked a police team in Indian-administered Kashmir on Friday, killing two officers and wounding one despite tight security in the disputed majority-Muslim region ahead of India’s Independence Day.

A group of fighters opened fire on the police team that was on duty in the Nowgam area of Srinagar city, the chief of police in Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, told the Reuters news agency.

Yemen: Pro-government forces clash with Southern Transitional Council (STC) separatists

Renewed clashes have erupted between forces loyal to the internationally-recognised Yemeni government and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Abyan Governorate, south-east of Yemen.

A RT correspondent said the clashes erupted one day after the pro-government forces brought reinforcements from Marib governorate to the coastal city of Shakra.

Sudan: Dozens killed in tribal clashes in eastern Sudan

At least 25 people have been killed in clashes between ethnic groups in a port city in eastern Sudan, according to a doctors’ association.

The Central Doctors’ Committee said in a statement on Wednesday that about 90 others were wounded in the fighting that began on Sunday between members of the Bani Aarem and Nuba ethnic groups in Port Sudan, a key international trade harbour on the Red Sea.

Mali: Militants in central Mali set jail ablaze in attack killing 2 people

Militants in volatile central Mali killed a prison officer and a gendarme late Monday night, officials said, in a raid that saw a jail set ablaze and five inmates escape.

The overnight attack occurred in the village of Kimparana, in the Segou region of central Mali, which has witnessed a surge in violence linked to a Jihadist insurgency.
