Ethiopia: Clashes between militias of 2 Somali and Afar Ethiopian States kill 27 people amid border dispute

Clashes between two Ethiopian states that have long disputed their border have killed at least 27 people, a government statement said, as the country faces surging ethnic violence.

The 27 were killed “due to conflicts along the borders of Somali and Afar”, the statement said. Militias from the two eastern states have clashed before over their disputed boundaries.

Nagorno-Karabakh: President of separatist region said that Azerbaijan forces closing in on key town of Shusha

The leader of Armenian separatists in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region said Thursday that Azerbaijani forces had advanced to within a few kilometres of the key town of Shusha.

“The enemy is several kilometres from Shushi, five kilometres (three miles) at most,” separatist president Arayik Harutyunyan said in a video on Facebook.

Afghanistan: 5 Taliban militants killed in clashes with Afghan army in Zabul

At least five Taliban insurgents, including a commander who was among the prisoners released by officials in Kabul under the US-brokered deal, were killed in the course of clashes in the southern Zabul province, local police chief Hekmatullah Kochi said on Wednesday.

“Ahmad Shah, a Taliban commander who had recently been released among 5,000 Taliban prisoners, was shot dead yesterday between the Shahr-e Safa district and the capital [of the Zabul province], Qalat-e Gilzay,” Kochi said in a press release, adding that two other Taliban fighters were left injured.

Colombia: National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel commander killed in military operation

Commander Uriel, one of the main leaders of Colombia’s left-wing National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels, was killed during a military operation, President Ivan Duque announced on Sunday.

“This is a particularly important blow (to the ELN) because one of the most visible figures of this terrorist organization has fallen,” the president said in a speech in Choco department, in northwest Colombia where the operation took place.

Pakistan: Bomb at seminary in Peshawar kills 8 students and wounds 136

A powerful bomb blast ripped through an Islamic seminary on the outskirts of the northwest Pakistani city of Peshawar on Tuesday morning, killing at least eight students and wounding 136 others, police and a hospital spokesman said.

The bombing happened as a prominent religious scholar during a special class was delivering a lecture about the teachings of Islam at the main hall of the Jamia Zubairia madrassa, said police officer Waqar Azim. He said initial investigations suggest the bomb went off minutes after someone left a bag at the madrassa.
