Nagorno-Karabakh fighting raises threat of escalation of the conflict

Heavy fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh continued Thursday with Armenia and Azerbaijan trading blame for new attacks, hostilities that raised the threat of Turkey and Russia being drawn into the conflict.

Speaking in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that according to the information Russia has acquired, the combined deaths from nearly four weeks of fighting over the region are nearing 5,000. Putin emphasized the need to negotiate a truce quickly.

Pakistan: 10 cops killed in clashes between Army and Karachi Police

Ten cops have died in clashes between the Karachi Police and the Pakistan Army, amid the reports that a ‘civil war-like situation’ is developing in the country.

According to a tweet by the International Herald, heavy fire was exchanged between the Sindh Police in Karachi and Pakistan Army, after the latter tried to take custody of a Superintendent of Police, Md. Aftab Anwar. Five Army officers had died in the ensuing firing.

Turkey: Turkish forces withdraw from largest base in northeast Syria

Turkish forces began withdrawing from Ankara’s largest base in Syria’s northeastern Idlib province shortly after midnight Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The group reported that convoys carrying military personnel and equipment were seen leaving the Morek base, one of 12 Turkish observation posts established in the region to monitor a fragile cease-fire in the nine-year-old conflict.

Nigeria: Several Boko Haram militants killed in a military operation

Several Boko Haram militants were killed in an operation executed by the military in Nigeria’s restive northeastern state of Borno, said a military spokesman on Monday.

Airstrikes targeting the Boko Haram terror group’s hideout in the Dikwa general area of Borno on Sunday hit accurate targets, said John Enenche, a spokesman for the military.

Afghanistan: 7 soldiers and 5 Taliban militants killed in clashes in Kunduz province

Seven soldiers and five Taliban militants were killed during armed clashes in Imam Sahib district of Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province Saturday night, a local official confirmed on Sunday.

“The clashes erupted after an unknown number of militants armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades attack security checkpoints of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in Ab Froshan and Bakhmal Kocha localities on outskirts of the district at mid-night Saturday,” district chief Mahbubullah Sayyedi told Xinhua.
