Thousands of residents have fled Bangassou, a town in the south-east of the Central African Republic (CAR) after an attack related to the country’s presidential elections.
Residents fled when violence erupted as rebels took control of Bangassou, a city on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, a day before authorities were due to declare the results of the election.

Armed clashes erupted between forces of UN-backed Government of National and those of rebel Gen. Khalifa Haftar Sunday in south Libya putting at stake a frail ceasefire, Libya Observer reports.
Sources told the media the clashes occurred when Sabha military zone officers of the GNA gathered to read out a congratulatory statement on Libya’s Independence Day and the GNA-commanded Libyan Army parade that was held in Tripoli on December 24.

Rebel fighters in Central African Republic attacked and partially occupied a diamond-mining town on Sunday, four security and humanitarian sources said, a day before authorities are due to declare results of the presidential election.
At least five rebels were killed and two army soldiers wounded in the clashes in Bangassou, which lies on the southern border with Democratic Republic of Congo, the U.N. peacekeeping mission MINUSCA said in a statement.

At least two Algerian soldiers have been killed in clashes with terrorists in the country’s northern Tipaza Province, Algeria’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
During the operation, four terrorists were killed and a cache of weapons was extracted, the ministry said.

At least 25 people were killed in an attack on New Year’s Eve by rebels in Congo’s eastern Beni territory, local officials said Friday.
Farmers had gone to the fields in the village of Tingwe when they were attacked by Allied Democratic Forces rebels, according to the representative of the governor in the region, Sabiti Njiamoja.
