Ukrainian troops are recapturing towns east of the capital Kyiv and Russian forces who had been trying to seize the city are falling back on their overextended supply lines, Britain’s Defense Ministry said Friday.
A month into their assault, Russian troops have failed to capture a major Ukrainian city. An offensive that Western countries believe was aimed at swiftly toppling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government has been halted at the gates of Kyiv.

Russia may be trying to create a pretext for the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine by accusing the US and its allies of preparing such an attack, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday.
“We are concerned partly because we see the rhetoric and we see that Russia is trying to create some kind of pretext accusing Ukraine, the United States and NATO allies of preparing to use chemical and biological weapons,” he told reporters after a NATO summit in Brussels, adding any use of chemical weapons would have widespread consequences.

Moscow launches cruise and hypersonic missiles targeting Ukrainian military assets as it steps up its military offensive.
Russia’s defence ministry says it attacked Ukraine with cruise missiles from ships in the Black and Caspian Seas, and with hypersonic missiles from Crimean airspace.
