Somalia: Somali forces free hotel from al-Shabaab militants, at least 9 dead

Somali security forces have stormed a hotel in Mogadishu, ending an occupation by al-Shabaab militants after a nearly daylong battle in which at least nine people were killed.

Gunfire crackled from inside the building as the special forces fought the militants more than 12 hours after the Islamist group stormed the building in the centre of the city.

Colombia: Colombian government and left-wing National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels launch new peace talks

The Colombian government and the left-wing National Liberation Army (ELN), the country’s largest remaining rebel group, launched new peace talks in neighbouring Venezuela aimed at ending nearly 60 years of conflict.

The push for the talks, which resumed on Monday after they were suspended in 2019, came from Colombia’s new first-ever left-wing President Gustavo Petro, who was a former member of the M-19 rebel movement.

Ukraine: Most of ukrainians left without power after new Russian strikes

A new onslaught of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure on Wednesday caused power outages across the country — and in neighboring Moldova — further hobbling Ukraine’s battered electricity network and compounding civilians’ misery as winter advances.

Multiple regions reported attacks in quick succession and Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said that “the vast majority of electricity consumers were cut off.”

Turkey: Erdogan says Turkey will attack Kurdish militants in Syria with tanks and soldiers

Turkey will attack militants with tanks and soldiers soon, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday, signalling a possible ground offensive against a Kurdish militia in Syria after retaliatory strikes escalated along the Syrian border.

His comments came as Turkish artillery kept up bombardment of Kurdish bases and other targets near the Syrian towns of Tal Rifaat and Kobani, two Syrian military sources told Reuters.

Burma-Myanmar: Hundreds of regime soldiers sent to Lung Ja Bum

The regime has moved additional soldiers, weapons and food in 18 trucks to Lon Ja Bum, where it is shelling the Kachin Independence Army camp in Momauk Township and deploying ground troops.

The Burma Army troops (BA) have set up camp around the mountain top in Lon Ja, Nawng Poung and Wawan villages. Locals fear that fighting between the groups will increase if the regime continues to try to capture the camp in Kachin State, which it has failed to do since launching attacks in late October.
