United States of America: US ponders possible military action against Syria

A White House official says the U.S. has a “range of options” if it decides to act against Syria’s alleged use of chemical weapons.

The official commented on Saturday as President Barack Obama met with his top national security advisers to discuss the Syrian government’s alleged use of chemical weapons on civilians in a Damascus suburb.

Peru: Peruvian forces kill 3 high-ranking rebels of Shining Path

Peru’s President Ollanta Humala said that security forces killed three high-ranking Shining Path members in southern Andean region of Ayacucho.

Humala told TV Peru that Alejandro Borda Casafranca, alias “Alipio,” and Martin Quispe Palomino, alias “Gabriel,” accused of being the number one and two in the Shining Path, were killed in a shootout with Peruvian security forces.

Colombia: At least 17 soldiers killed in Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) attack

Colombia’s rebel group FARC killed at least 17 soldiers in combat in the northeast of the country, said the army Saturday. Fourteen others were reported missing.

The fighting took place on the border of Fortul and Tame, two municipalities in the troubled Arauca department where the FARC and fellow-rebel group ELN have strong presence.

Colombia: 30 National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels surrender in Colombia

Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos has met 30 rebels of the ELN, the country’s second largest armed group, who laid down their arms.

Santos called the development “a great step towards peace”.

The ELN, or National Liberation Army, is not part of the peace talks with Colombia’s largest rebel group, the FARC, but its leaders have expressed interest in joining the negotiations.

United States of America: 2 killed and at least 120 injured in 2 Boston marathon blasts

Two people were killed and more than 100 others were injured this afternoon as two powerful explosions detonated in quick succession near the Boston Marathon finish line in Boston’s Back Bay section, transforming a scene of athletic celebration into bloody chaos.

When the smoke cleared, dozens of victims lay in the street, some unconscious, some grievously injured, including some whose limbs had been torn off by the blast. The dead included an 8-year-old boy, according to two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation.
