Burma-Myanmar: Residents of a town in Chin State flee military junta artillery barrage

The entire population of the mountaintop town of Thantlang in Chin State has fled after being bombarded by Myanmar junta forces during an intense clash with civilian resistance forces on the weekend.

Virtually the entire population of around 8,000 residents have already left the town, with just a few dozen people including pastors and senior citizens remaining, according to Thantlang Placement Affair Committee-IDPs Help (TPAC-IDPs), which is assisting the fleeing residents.

Burma-Myanmar: Fighting between army and a self-defence militia kill at least 15 people

At least 15 villagers, including several teenage students, have been killed in some of Myanmar’s deadliest fighting since July between government troops and resistance forces, a villager and independent media have reported.

The fighting near Gangaw Township in the northwestern Magway Region started on Thursday, two days after a call for a nationwide uprising was issued by the National Unity Government, a opposition organisation that seeks to coordinate resistance to military rule.

Afghanistan: Taliban claims complete control of Afghanistan after Panjshir victory

The Taliban have declared victory over the province of Panjshir northeast of the capital Kabul, the final pocket of territory which has remained outside their rule.

The group posted footage online of their fighters raising their flag there on Monday.

Afghanistan: The Afghan resistance says reports of its defeat in Panjshir are Taliban propaganda

A band of Afghan resistance fighters holed up in Afghanistan’s rugged Panjshir province northeast of Kabul has repelled repeated attacks by Taliban fighters in recent days, a representative for the group tells NPR.

Speaking with NPR’s All Things Considered on Friday, Ali Nazary, the National Resistance Front’s head of foreign relations, who is currently in the U.S., also denied reports that the Taliban have taken control of the province — the last major territory standing between the Islamist militia and total control over Afghanistan — calling the rumors “propaganda.”
