Indonesia: Government rejects West Papua National Liberation Army (WPNLA) rebels demand on Papua independence talks

Indonesia’s government on Tuesday rejected a demand by rebels in the country’s restive Papua province to hold negotiations on the territory’s self-determination, following a Dec. 2 attack on a construction site that left at least 17 dead.

An insurgency has simmered in Papua since the early 1960s, when Indonesia annexed the region that was a former Dutch colony. It was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 after a U.N.-sponsored ballot that was seen as a sham by many.

India: Jaish-e-Muhammad rebels kill 4 policemen in Kashmir

Four policemen were killed when rebels stormed a police post in the southern part of Indian-administered Kashmir’s Shopian district.

The state police chief Dilbagh Singh told Al Jazeera the police were attacked on Tuesday while they guarded four families of a minority Hindu community of Kashmiri Pandits.

Azerbaijan: Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan 27 times

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian armed forces have 27 times violated the ceasefire along the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Dec. 10.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Burma-Myanmar: Arakan Army (AA) and Burmese army clash in Buthidaung township

The Myanmar Army and the Arakan Army (AA) have engaged in a series of clashes over the past six days or so along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border, according to the ethnic armed group.

“The two sides engaged in a fierce clash from 6.30 a.m. till 2 p.m. [Wednesday], and the fighting continued sporadically [till evening],” AA information officer U Khaing Thu Kha told The Irrawaddy on Wednesday.

Burma-Myanmar: Clashes between Burmese army and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Gwi Htun Bum

BA’s 111th LIR troops currently stationed at Lawa Pa, Mada Bum launched an attack on KIA’s 44th Battalion position at Gwi Htun Bum in Hpakant township on Dec 3 at around 1 pm. BA troops began the attack by firing 10 artillery rounds on Gwi Htun Bum followed by infantry units. The two sides battled till 4:40 pm in the afternoon.
