Russian forces have made progress in their campaign to capture the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, the focus of the war’s longest ground battle, but their assault will be difficult to sustain without more significant personnel losses, British military officials said Saturday.
The U.K. Defense Ministry said in its latest assessment that paramilitary units from the Kremlin-controlled Wagner Group have seized most of eastern Bakhmut, with a river flowing through the city now marking the front line of the fighting.

M23 rebels were advancing in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, according to local officials, after a regional ceasefire agreement collapsed.
Clashes with troops erupted on Monday in North Kivu province – where the Tutsi-led M23 have captured swathes of territory since re-emerging from dormancy in late 2021 – and continued through Wednesday.

At least 35 Myanmar junta troops including allied Pyu Saw Htee militia were killed in the last three days as People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and an ethnic armed organization (EAO) hit regime targets across the country.
Deadly clashes were reported in Magwe, Sagaing and Mandalay regions and Mon State.

Twenty-four days of fighting, officials say, displaces 200,000 families in Las Anod town, which straddles a key trade route and is claimed by both Somaliland and neighbouring Puntland, a semi-autonomous state of Somalia.
More than 200 people lost their lives in over 24 days of clashes between security forces and clans in a disputed part of Somalia’s breakaway Somaliland region, an official has said.

The Ukrainian military might pull troops back from the key stronghold of Bakhmut, an adviser to Ukraine’s president said Wednesday in remarks that suggested Russia could capture the city that has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.
Kremlin forces have waged a bloody, monthslong offensive to take Bakhmut, a city of salt and gypsum mines in eastern Ukraine that has become a ghost town.
